FAQs

What makes Blue Crane different from other Physical Therapy?

I provide high-quality, personalized, integrative physical therapy to address all of the factors which may be impacting your condition or concern, including physical/biomechanical, emotional/social, intellectual, energetic and spiritual. I customize your care by drawing on my experience and knowledge of evidence-based rehabilitative science, as well as yoga principles, including mindfulness, meditation and asana (posture). My goal is for you to have the knowledge and capability to manage your condition and to live an active thriving life at the level of wellness you desire.

What conditions do you treat?

As a doctor of physical therapy I have extensive specialty training and experience in orthopedics and musculoskeletal conditions including low back and sacro-iliac joint pain.  I specialize in working with yoga practitioners who are experiencing nagging injuries or age-related changes.  If you have questions about your specific condition, I’m happy to answer them.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Washington and California are direct-access states, meaning you can begin physical therapy treatment without a doctor’s prescription. However, if you are in California, you will need to provide a prescription after 45 days or 12 visits, whichever occurs first.

What is Medical Therapeutic Yoga?

Medical Therapeutic Yoga (MTY) is an innovative methodology for using yoga in healthcare and wellness care as a form of integrative and functional medicine by licensed healthcare professionals. Developed by Dr. Ginger Garner over 25 years ago, it has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with both acute and chronic pain.

MTY incorporates the science and evidence base of lifestyle medicine, integrative medicine, functional medicine and rehabilitation science with the practice of yoga to lessen pain and improve function with any patient population. MTY employs modifications important for each person and incorporates nervous system calming, education and movement to effectively address acute and chronic pain. MTY can be used to address postural imbalances, low back and neck pain, chronic pain, sports injuries, and stress management.

Medical Therapeutic Yoga (MTY) allows me to provide deeper, more impactful care for my clients. Read more about why MTY is so important to me personally and professionally.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance and am considered an out-of-network provider. I do not bill insurance companies directly for my services but upon request I can provide you with documentation to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Payment is therefore due at the time of services. I am not a Medicare provider, so law prevents me from providing Medicare patients with physical therapy. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, I can see you for yoga only.

What are your rates?

Is Blue Crane a good fit for me?

Blue Crane is a good fit for anyone who values health as one of their most important assets, feels motivated to participate in managing their health, is committed to investing in their long term wellness, and has an open mind.

If you’re still not sure or have other questions, please contact me and we can discuss your needs. If Blue Crane isn’t the best fit for you, I will be happy to refer you to appropriate health care professionals in your area.

How does telehealth work?

With telehealth, you receive care and treatment by video in your home or office. Just as in any treatment session, we will review your progress, celebrate successes, discuss limitations and update your goals. Whether in-person or via the computer, my goal is to work in partnership with you to create the best course of treatment for your lifestyle.

All virtual sessions are conducted on a secure HIPAA-compliant platform (Practice Better).    You will need to activate your Practice Better account and set up your login and password before the time of your session.  During the scheduling and  intake process, I will send you an email with a link to the portal.

On the day of your appointment, set yourself up in a distraction-free space with an area where you can set or prop your phone or laptop, with a view of an area big enough for you to lie down on the floor and perform full body movements. Dress in loose or comfortable clothing that allows for exercise and, if needed, exposure of the involved body part.

One to five minutes before our scheduled appointment time, click the link in the email to enter the virtual treatment room. I will admit you to the virtual meeting room at our scheduled time. After your appointment, I will summarize the goals and treatment plan we agree on, and send your individual home program (IHP) through the secure online portal.
